Wood and Waves A Coastal Haven Designed by De Rosee Sa
Cornwall Retreat is located on the cliffs of Cornwall, UK. It was designed by the London-based architectural and interior design firm De Rosee Sa, creating a vacation home that combines tranquility and a natural atmosphere for a family who loves surfing. The project starts from the local architectural context and topographic features, and integrates into the coastal landscape in a restrained manner. The exterior facade of the building is covered with wood, with a low volume that echoes the height of the surrounding ridge. As the director of the firm, Max de Rosee, put it: "This house is deliberately kept low-key to respect the scale and character of the coastal environment."

The entrance corridor is wrapped in windowless wood, creating an understated prelude. When the gate opens, the panoramic view of the coastline runs through the entire space in a dramatic way, forming the core of the architectural spirit. Each room is designed to engage in dialogue with the natural landscape of Cornwall, closely integrating the living experience with the environment. Compared with the owner's traditional residence in London (also modernized by De Rosee Sa), this place places more emphasis on touch and the simple material language - breathable clay paint, warm wood and local stone, endowing the space with a natural texture and atmosphere.

The central staircase of the residence is dominated by wooden railings and wide oak flooring, complemented by custom-made linen sofas and woodwork details from the studio, presenting a unified aesthetic of architecture and furniture. As senior project architect George Yallop pointed out: "This handcrafted construction method integrates the furniture with the structure, creating a consistent visual and tactile experience."

The design pays attention to both sustainability and durability simultaneously. The orientation of the building and the selection of materials jointly regulate humidity, optimize lighting and thermal comfort. In response to the lifestyle of the residents, the building has specially set up a "surfing room", featuring terrazzo floors and walls, oak storage cabinets, large washbasins and outdoor showers, demonstrating a balance between functionality and detail. The master bedroom is ingeniously placed within the roof volume to minimize the architectural scale. The living space is located on the ground floor. The kitchen and the living room are separated by a half-wall and an open bookshelf, maintaining fluidity and layering. The bedroom area is hidden on the lower level, forming an upper and lower response with the open space facing the garden, allowing the indoor circulation to naturally extend to the terrace and the garden. The stone, vegetation and terrain jointly shape an organic habitat suitable for coastal life.
