A Timeless Elegance in Salento A Blend of History and Modernity in Casa Soleto
Casa Soleto is located in Soleto, a small town in the heart of Salento in the Puglia region of Italy. It is a 17th-century noble residence restored under the leadership of Andrew Trotter and Marcelo Martinez. As a typical village living residence, it presents the juxtaposition and dialogue between history and contemporary life with genuine and understated luxury.

This approximately 220-square-meter mansion features the Baroque details of a small palace on its exterior, while the interior seems to have stood still: the towering vaulted space, the 300-year-old wooden doors, nonna's kitchen and the original stone floor have all been preserved intact. The spatial layout of the mansion is like a maze - passing through the front yard, entering the high-ceilinged living and dining area, and then turning to the former private chapel, which has now become a media room with a four-meter-long sofa. A small soaking pool has been set up in the backyard garden, bringing a soothing coolness to the hot summer.

The repair process is far more difficult than imagined. The long-term idleness of the house has led to damp walls and rudimentary drainage facilities. As a result, the ceilings of some bedrooms and bathrooms have had to be rebuilt. However, the designer insisted on continuing the texture of the building with the least intervention. The wall is decorated with Domingue plaster finish completed by the Tullio Cardinale team, which has a delicate touch yet is rich in layers. The inner door panels have been restored and given a new life, while the outer parts have been remade by Alba Falegnameria, a woodworking workshop in Lecce, using traditional techniques. The bathroom uses a retro bathroom from Valadares to avoid the visual conflict of excessive modernization.

In terms of furniture and soft furnishings, Andrew Trotter tends to combine local craftsmanship with modern simplicity. The large walnut table in the restaurant is from the Abbey of Abruzzo, and the red wardrobe is a work by Lombardy from the 18th to the 19th century. The textiles are from local artisan Paglia di Lino, while Armadillo Rugs' jute carpets add the comfort of barefoot living to the space. Some of the artworks originally belonged to the old house, but Belgian young artist Eleanor Herbosh used the soil of the house to create three exclusive works.

Soletto, as a traditional town of Salento, still retains a unique pace of life: children play on the streets, the elderly debate on the steps, and grandmothers make pasta by hand. The frescoes in the Santo Stefano Chapel of the small town are comparable to Giotto's masterpieces, while the "Soleto Map" unearthed in 2003 is regarded as one of the oldest geographical documents in Europe. Casa Soleto, with its delicate restoration and integration with contemporary living facilities, not only continues the historical atmosphere of the building but also recreates the poetic daily life of villages and towns in southern Italy.
