Arc Brick Light Court M Residence and the Symbiosis of Modernist Design
M Residence is a residential renovation project led by the Melbourne-based architectural firm Paul Conrad Architects, located in a lush neighborhood in the east of Melbourne. Its original building was constructed in 1936 and designed by architect Marcus Martin, embodying the typical features of interwar residences in the 1930s. This renovation, under the premise of respecting the historical context, reinterprets the classic form with modernist design language, creating a contemporary residence that is both functional and comfortable for the owner's family of three.

The core challenge of the project lies in how to integrate the refined modernist principles with the original architectural style within the limited land. The founder of the firm, Paul Conrad, proposed to respond to the site boundary with an arc-shaped volume, covering the existing driveway with the new part, thereby introducing the master bedroom suite, the second living room and the garage. The exterior of the new building is contrasted sharply with a dark metal cladding. Meanwhile, the texture and durability of the building are enhanced through handcrafted brickwork and a double-height atrium. The combination of bricks of different widths and textures gives the expanded part a unique expression, echoing traditional craftsmanship while showcasing contemporary tension.

In the handling of spatial relationships, the connection between the old and new volumes is particularly meticulous. The dark metal volume serves as a transition, visually unifying the structure of the two parts. At the same time, large areas of Windows are opened on the north and west sides to introduce fragmented views of the shade of the block's trees. The landscape design was completed by Eckersley Garden Architecture. With the concept of "outdoor rooms", it extends the indoor and outdoor experiences, allowing the courtyard and the surrounding greenery to jointly create the continuity of the space.

Interior design achieves a balance between materials and details. The light-colored wooden floor creates a warm and mellow tone, echoing the contemporary European style. Historical elements such as ceiling cornices, wall openings and wooden frame sliding Windows have been retained, while the minimalist kitchen design enhances daily functionality and convenience. Dark wood and natural stone run through the living, kitchen and master bedroom areas, creating a sense of material unity. The light linen curtain softens the atmosphere in the play of light and shadow, endowing the space with a delicate touch.

As Conrad said, the close integration of the interior and the architecture is the highlight of this case. By establishing a solid architectural relationship between the old and the new, M Residence demonstrates a balance and dialogue between the historical context and contemporary demands.

Nestled within the curated harmony of M Residence—where heritage brickwork meets sweeping modern arcs—the Siena Striped Floral Rustic Cottage Pillow Cover echoes this dialogue between time and texture. Just as Paul Conrad wove dark metal and hand-laid brick into a narrative of past and present, this pillow blends rustic stripes and delicate botanicals, offering a touch of pastoral elegance to contemporary or classic interiors. Its cotton-like softness recalls the light-filtering curtains of the Melbourne home, while the floral motif mirrors the garden’s dappled shadows brought indoors by Eckersley’s landscape vision.

Ideal for layering on a minimalist sofa or a vintage armchair, the Siena pillow doesn’t just accessorize—it tells a story. Like Conrad’s respect for historic cornices and modern volumes, it bridges eras with quiet grace. Explore the collection and weave a piece of thoughtful design into your own space.
