Hollywood Regency Revival: Lloydcrest House
Lloydcrest House is located on a hillside in the Post Office area of Beverly Hills, California, known for its Bohemian feel, large lots and stunning views. Designers Arya and Michael Martin, principals and co-founders of Studio Osklo, have combined tradition and modernity in this' 40s home to create a modern home full of history.
Designed in the 1940s by Georgius Cannon, a protege of renowned architect Wallace Neff, the single-storey house has four bedrooms and five bathrooms. The Martins' design vision was to adapt to contemporary lifestyles by preserving the classic elements of the Hollywood Regency while injecting a modern touch. They subtly blend tradition and modernity through the choice of furniture and materials, presenting a warm and sophisticated sense of luxury.
In Lloydcrest House, the light and layout of the space is made full use of. The traditional medieval architectural form has been preserved and reinterpreted through modern Art Deco furniture and a palette of neutral tones. Furniture such as beige wool upholstered chairs and green fur casual chairs add a comfortable yet elegant atmosphere to the house.
The Martins customized unique furniture for each room to fit the dimensions and proportions of the old rooms. The glass-lined design of the dining room allows for plenty of light, while the eccentric fireplace in the master bedroom adds a personal touch to the house. The designers added decorative panels and new fireplaces to the original structure, giving the house a more modern feel while retaining the original style.
The grey speckled marble is another highlight in the house, with the texture of the marble throughout, from the kitchen to the master bathroom, becoming a key element in the space. Designers believe that this kind of marble can be very good! To highlight the characteristics of the Hollywood Regency period, giving the space a low-key sense of luxury.
Another notable feature of Lloydcrest House is its extensive garden landscape. The main living area overlooks the mature tree canopy and lower pool deck, a beautiful natural landscape that the designers made part of the house by reorienting it. The relayout of the pool and garden not only broadens the view, but also injects more privacy and openness into the house.
Lloydcrest House is the perfect balance of tradition and modernity. It demonstrates not only the designers' deep understanding of Hollywood Regency style, but also their remarkable ability to give new life to historic homes through modern approaches. The house is both a tribute to California heritage and an ideal home for modern living.
