Provence Elegance: John Tanner's Fusion of Tradition & Modernity
Located in Provence in the south of France, a quaint home with its natural materials and carefully selected antiques reveals a quiet and thoughtful beauty. The house is a testament to John Tanner's interior design talent, which blends tradition with modernity, nature and art in a unique way.
John Tanner's path to interior design began with his skateboarding career. From the ages of 15 to 21, he traveled the world skating for sponsors and filmmakers. During these trips, his passion for collecting gradually expanded from vintage skateboards to other beautiful objects. This obsession with collecting and love of design eventually led him to the field of interior design.
John renovated a house in Cotignac, Provence, which was not only a turning point in his personal life, but also a source of inspiration for his designs. He procured antiques here and immersed himself in the process of finding and creating beauty. His Instagram account caught the attention of a Toronto businesswoman who invited John to decorate her new home in Provence.
John decided to keep the house's soft color scheme dominated by white, emphasizing its bright, airy quality and connection to the garden. He uses natural materials and handicrafts such as curtains in white Schumacher linen and voile in Lee Jofa to bring a fresh breath to the interior.
Over the course of two years, John collected antiques from all over the world, including Provencal works tracked down from the United States. His design incorporates Georgian floor lighting converted into reading lights and control tables in the French provincial Baroque style. The combination of these antiques and modern elements adds a unique charm to the house.
John's design of two large custom wooden dining tables, made from fully recycled materials in Belgium, reflects his emphasis on sustainability and craftsmanship. The kitchen is carefully crafted by local carpenters, showing respect for traditional craftsmanship.
John's attention to detail can be seen in every corner of the house. From gold-plated bronze candlestick lamps from Julia Boston Antiques to 18th century Provence mirrors, each ornament was carefully selected to ensure they harmonized with the overall design.
John Tanner's house project in Provence is a profound exploration of beauty, history and nature. His work displays a quiet yet stylish feel, and each unique piece is carefully selected and cleverly arranged. With his second commission in Normandy and the restoration project of the Hulne Abbey wing in Northumberland, John's design journey continues and his talent and passion will continue to shine in homes around the world.
